Lt Col Jez Lamb was commissioned into 2nd Fusiliers in August 1998 and spent the next two years as an armoured infantry platoon commander training in Canada and Poland, and deployed on operations in Kosovo.  After 18 months training recruits at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, he returned to the battalion to command a temporary fire station in Glasgow during the Fire Brigades Union strike.  This was followed by a 30 month operational deployment to North and West Belfast as battalion operations officer and adjutant.

On promotion to major in 2006, he commanded a company from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment for a seven month tour of Iraq, primarily based in Basra, for which he was awarded a Military Cross.  This was followed by staff training and a return to 2nd Fusiliers to command B Company, initially based in Cyprus and exercising in Jordan, and moving to Hounslow in London in early 2008 to conduct public duties.  Company command concluded with an operational deployment to a patrol base north of Musa Qala in the summer of 2009.  After the Afghanistan tour, Lt Col Lamb was employed as a staff officer in the Joint Force Headquarters coinciding with the Arab Spring as a result of which he was detached the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  This position required him to brief the Prime Minister chaired COBR each morning on the progress of the evacuation from Libya, as well as conducting planning for potential evacuations from several other neighbouring countries and briefing the Foreign Secretary on related military activity.  In late 2011 he became a desk officer in the Operations Directorate of the Ministry of Defence with responsibility for the strategic delivery of operations in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula.

On promotion to lieutenant colonel he attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course before serving as Military Assistant to two Ministers of State for the Armed Forces, Rt Hon Mark Francois MP and Ms Penny Mordaunt MP.  He assumed command of 1st Fusiliers in August 2016.
