Women in Ground Close Combat
Published: July 12th, 2016
As you will be well aware, the decision has been taken to open Ground Close Combat roles to women. This decision will see the Royal Armoured Corps open some units this year with all other RAC units open by 2018. The remaining GCC roles, including Infantry, will be open from 2018, once the updated Physical Employment Standards have been implemented. There has been no decision yet as to which Infantry battalions will be chosen.
There has been some unwelcome and unhelpful comments in the media which smacks of ignorance and unprofessionalism. Those of us who have served alongside women on operations over the last few years know that they have performed superbly; as our medics, our fire controllers, our engineers and our bomb disposal experts. There is absolutely no reason why they should not be offered the same opportunity to serve in Close Combat units – providing the same standards of selection and training are strictly maintained.
This Regiment will treat the decision as an opportunity and not a threat. If you have strong opinions, then by all means contact me through my blog; [email protected] . I assure you I will reflect your views up the chain of command.
